One of our favourite summer trends is the maxi dress. Maybe you’ve never worn one before in which case you won’t realise just what an asset they are to your wardrobe, especially in summer. Back in the day they were flouncy and flowing in the main whereas this seasons’ are altogether more sophisticated and flattering. Here are our top five tips to help you to love your maxi dress.

1.    Keep It Simple
A simple style fitted on the bust and waist and flowing over the hips is really flattering and gives you a slim-line silhouette, with the extra length making your legs look longer. Avoid a pleated skirt as it can make hips look heavy. If you want to draw attention to your waist wear a wide belt or maybe for party wear a sparkly one to match your jewellery. If you keep the style simple you can add your own touches with accessories.

2.    What Footwear Is Best With A Maxi?
For daytime and for comfort either flat sandals or ballet pumps – also platform sandals or wedges. Take a pair with you when you shop for your dress to get the correct length, which is with the hem resting just above your upper ankle, not touching the floor. For more glamorous occasions such as parties and weddings dress up your maxi dress with high heels.

3.    Plain or Patterned
This summer there are some beautiful prints around, some stunning oriental themed prints and jewel bright colours which give a really summery look. If you prefer simple, block colours try a brighter shade than you would normally choose, so that you have that summer glow!

4.    Ideal For Holidays
Cool and comfortable, and so easy to wear over swimwear. Pack several maxis, maybe patterns and floral prints for daytime and something more sophisticated for evenings. For holidays, choose fabrics that are easy to wash and dry quickly and are uncrushable. For evenings wear a silky shawl or kimono jacket over your shoulders.

5.    Through into Autumn
Wear your dresses right through summer and into autumn. So you’ll be able to wear yours even when the summer weather turns cooler, with a light top and underneath. Or you could add a short jacket or top that ends at the waist for a balanced look.

With such versatility you can see why the maxi is such an asset to your summer look.
