OK, so the weather this summer hasn’t been too great but we have high expectations of a heatwave in August. So with this in mind we have come up with the solutions to five typical seasonal dilemmas.

“I work in a very formal office and in summer it’s boiling hot. How can I keep cool while still looking smart?”
Shirt dresses can be a great solution to this problem. Mid-length, in a fabric that doesn’t cling. If you want to show off your waist wear with a wide belt. Choose a cotton and linen fabric – easy to wash and not easily creased. Wear with a smart jacket and heels, or a bolero cardigan. The shirt dress is also one of this season’s top fashion looks.

“I love denim jackets but I’m not sure if they’re still in fashion. What do you think?”
A big yes! Denim jackets never date, are cool and comfortable, and are a wardrobe staple. This year’s styles tend to be over-sized and some have embroidered motifs and decorations if you want to be bang up-to date. Short jackets go well with maxi dresses or shorts. Just beware of double denim!

“I’m going to a smart wedding in August and I’m not happy wearing girly clothes. Help! What can I wear?”
A smart trouser suit is always a good choice and it doesn’t have to be pastel coloured! But mid-grey or French navy with a fitted top would be a classic look – then brighten it up with accessories. f you prefer a dress choose one of this years’ maxis in a colour you love and team with a same colour or contrasting gossamer shawl or pashmina, echoing that shade in your accessories. As for hats – well if you’re not a hat person an ornamental hair-slide or decoration would be fine, but do your research beforehand!

“I tend to wear only black and have got a bit used to that but I’d love to try some of this summers’ bright colours and patterns.”
Black’s a safe choice but at Apples and Pears we love colourful clothes! There’s lots of choice in this year’s beautiful range of prints and patterns. Maybe introduce a bit of colour to start with, say a block colour shrug or accessories with a neutral colour maxi dress. Try prints there’s loads to choose from with birds and butterflies and oriental designs. So break away from black and give colour a go!

“I’m short of cash but need a pair of summer shoes. What’s the most versatile style?”
Wedge heeled shoes with a peep toe will suit any occasion – smart for work, yet dressed up for social times and holidays. Really comfortable too, and better to walk in than stilettoes, while the height makes legs look longer. Also wedges are in fashion this summer, so there’s a vast range of colours and styles, and prices, and at the end of the season keep an eye on the sales – wedges never really go out of fashion so get yourself a bargain for next summer.

Now we need a long hot summer that lasts right through till the end of October!
