With Christmas over, we are now really into the depths of Winter.  And with the really cold weather on its way it’s time to invest in some cosy new winter knitwear. Donate last year’s well-worn jumpers to your local charity shop and take a look at the wide array of new styles designs and colours for this season.
1. Which Fabric Is Warmest?
Whilst pure wool and cashmere can be lovely, they can also be irritating if you have sensitive skin. Acrylic and polyester are used for a lot of knitwear in a variety of weights and they are just as warm and are more durable than natural fibres which sometimes have to be dry-cleaned. They are better value for money and more resistant to stains. Several thinner layers are warmer than one heavy chunky one.

2. How to Avoid Stretching and Shrinking
A thinner synthetic knit is much less prone to stretching or shrinking and also to piling or bobbling as the knit is tighter and restricts loose fibres collecting on the surface. Acrylic sometimes stretches so it’s well worth washing by hand before a gentle spin then drying flat on a towel. Also avoid ironing as this can cause stretching too. Good quality acrylic usually contains some elastane in the weave to help retain the shape. Pure wool and cashmere will probably need to be dry cleaned as they tend to shrink. Read the washing instructions.

3. This Winters’ Styles
Over-sized, slouchy and comfortable is the look to go for this year. Sleeves are long and roomy, some with frills and ruffles. There are a wide variety of necklines, from classic roll-necks, crew and V-necks to funnel and cosy cowl necks.  Also loose jumper dresses to wear with thick patterned tights or leggings. Off the shoulder styles look good over a thinner jumper in a contrasting colour.  Or make a statement with embroidery on sleeves and necklines. These can be great for special occasions.

4. This Winters Colours – Bright and Cheerful!
Jewel bright reds, oranges and yellows make a real change from the usual drab shades of winter. All sorts of patterns and colours which are usually considered to clash such as red and pink, are popular. Match these bold colours looks with black navy and dark grey.

5. Finally
Don’t forget the cardigan! Boyfriend style, roomy and with pockets these are a comfortable extra layer and a mile away from the ones your gran wears!  Long and over-sized they can be worn well into the spring as a light jacket.

So, this winter it’s easy to stay warm and comfortable. If you wash gently and use fabric softener you’ll be able to wear them next winter too, packing them in air tight vacuum bags in spring to protect them from the dreaded moth!
