With our climate so unpredictable and often disappointing, it’s such a joy when hot and sunny weather arrives. But it’s all too easy to throw caution to the wind and ignore the sensible advice about looking after your skin that bit extra to avoid sun damage. Also a few simple additions to your normal routine will avoid the pain and discomfort that over exposure can cause.

Here are our five top tips to keep your skin in top condition and enjoy the summer.

Protection
Always wear an SPF cream under your make-up, or on bare skin. Choose one which has a high protection factor and use on all exposed skin, not forgetting areas like the tops of your feet and the back of your neck. You don’t have to spend a fortune on products – the main supermarkets sell their own creams and lotions at a lot cheaper price.

Moisturise
When you’re outside, keep applying moisturising lotion throughout the day and then reapply sun protection after. The softer and smoother your skin the better sun products will be absorbed. Pay attention to knees and elbows, areas where the skin is a different texture. Gel moisturisers are easy to apply and sink into your skin quicker than creams, and without leaving a marks.

Hydrate
When it’s really hot the most refreshing way to cool down is to spritz your face with cool water, also your neck – simply buy a water spritz bottle and half fill with water and keep in the fridge until needed. Put your wrists under the tap and run the water over them. Do the same with your feet and ankles. Rosewater which you can buy at any chemist smells lovely and you can add some to your spritzer too. Rosewater also has a calming effect. Needless to say, drink plenty of water too – it really is the most refreshing drink you can have.

Puffy Eyes
Lack of sleep often causes puffy eyes and often appear at a time when you least want them such as an important occasion! A quick remedy is to enclose an ice cube in a cotton wool or muslin pad and hold on the swollen area for about five minutes. Better still is to think ahead ant to make a tray of green tea ice cubes. For the delicate skin around the eyes always keep well moisturised. You don’t need to buy expensive special eye creams. A good quality general purpose moisturiser will do.

Sunglasses
Bright sunlight can really dazzle your eyes and dry out the surrounding skin. Also, even when you are wearing a sun cream it’s best to keep in the shade when the sun is at its hottest. Don’t forget to wear a hat or floaty scarf if you do have to be exposed and also tops of arms and shoulders can burn very quickly.

Our message is to enjoy the sun and the heat but to keep your skin safe with a simple skincare routine.
