Winter can have a really damaging effect on your hair – icy days and central heating can dry hair out and make it dull and lifeless. Foggy and damp days make hair lank and heavy and it’s tempting to hide your crowning glory under a woolly hat until spring! Emergency rescue treatments are expensive and time consuming. Instead use our four top tips to help keep your hair in good condition – shiny, free from split ends and easy to manage.

1.Don’t Shampoo Too Often
Every other day is quite enough to wash your hair in winter. Weather conditions and central heating strips away essential oils. Always use a mild shampoo formulated for your hair type and a conditioner too. Maybe try a pre-wash conditioner or one which is formulated to leave for extra nourishment. You can always use a dry shampoo for in between.

Use Lukewarm Water
It’s tempting to use hot water in this cold weather or a hot shower but lukewarm is much better for your hair. Only use a pea-sized amount of shampoo and rinse well before applying conditioner. Leave on for a few minutes and rinse well, giving a final rinse with cold water to promote shine. For extra dry hair moisturise overnight. Before you sleep spray with a light mist of vitamin E oil. Comb through with a wide toothed comb and leave until morning.

Don’t Overbrush
Forget the old wives’ tale of a hundred strokes every day. In winter, hair is drier and more brittle and more easily pulled out or damaged. So brush gently using a wide toothed brush or comb to get rid of tangles. A natural bristle brush is better than metal or plastic as it doesn’t stretch the hair cuticles or increase the chance of static electricity. For smoother finish put a little olive on your brush or comb. Finally have a regular trim of about half an inch to get rid of dead ends

Dress to Protect Your Hair
To protect your hair from dry air cover with a pretty scarf on freezing day. When you choose a new coat, buy one with a close-fitting hood. If you have long hair avoid roll-necks as hair tends to get knotted at the back, causing tangles. Finally use fabric softener when washing your clothes, again to avoid the build-up of static electricity which makes hair misbehave.

Use our tips and your hair will be in top condition to celebrate spring!
