After a hot and sunny few months, the weather seems to the changeable weather we are more used to in the UK.  This makes it really hard to decide what to wear – a summer dress?  Waterproofs?  A jumper? All three?!  Layers are the answer and we’ve come up with five great ideas to help you to dress for now while being prepared with an extra layer when the weather lets you down.

  1. Boleros
Choose your style carefully as if too loose and long these can look frumpy. Ideally, they should sit slightly above the waist and with trousers or a skirt which is high waisted. This gives a slim look and makes legs look longer and slimmer too. Avoid drop waisted dresses and hipster trousers with boleros.

  2. Capes
These can look a bit heavy if in dark colours and if too voluminous so choose pale pastel colours and in soft floaty fabrics and capes can look really glamorous for evening wear. Especially useful for chilly evenings for special occasions.

  3. Kimonos
Sheer or semi-sheer loose fit kimonos are still very popular.  They serve as a lightweight layer and can be a great way to add colour to a neutral outfit.  Keep the rest of our outfit fairly fitted, and experiment with pretty kimono prints.

  4. Jackets and Blazers
A good blazer or jacket is a great wardrobe staple, and they work as a great extra layer on a chilly morning.  Great for work or smarter occasions or even try mixing it up with jeans or a dress.

  5. Trench Coats
Great for seeing you through from cold summer days into Autumn. These are really useful especially if you choose one in a silky fabric that looks good over summer dresses as well as slipped over smart trousers or more formal wear. The best length is midi and in a neutral colour. Easy to shrug off and doesn’t crease, you can just fold up and put in your bag when the sun comes out.

So that extra layer really doesn’t need to be a problem if you choose carefully.
