Our Favourite Retro Make-Up Looks

The Vintage look for clothes has really grown in popularity in recent years and here at Apples and Pears we love playing with different looks from different eras.  So, once you have the perfect retro dress, here is some inspiration for make-up styles, to match.

1950’s
This was a glamorous post war look – think Audrey Hepburn.
  • Pale and creamy foundation for a natural look, although applied thickly to give a flawless complexion, then with a layer of powder to set it. Rouge was then applied to the apples of the cheeks, but subtly unlike the rosy look of the 1940s
  • Subtle eyeshadow shades on eyelids some with a shimmery look. Eyebrows were a natural but slimmer shape. Wing effect eyeliner is a key part of this look. Mascara was used on the top lashes only and false lashes too.
  • Choose soft pinks and bold reds for lips.
1960’s
  • ‘The London Look’ – think Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton – introduced a new style with foundation looking more natural, either using just face powder or light translucent liquids and cream foundations.
  • All emphasis was on the eyes with blue, grey and white shadows being the most popular in daytime and blue and green for evenings. Eye liner and mascara were both worn thickly and false eyelashes top and bottom. Eyebrows were plucked out and drawn in with pencil.
  • With eyes appearing huge lips took second place, with lipstick pale and nude pink and a lip gloss over. Some outlined with lip pencil.
1970s
  • Light liquid foundation formulas were popular, with bronzers blended on cheeks to give a natural-looking glow.
  • Shimmer pastel eyeshadows with a lighter coating of mascara on top and bottom lashes were the look.
  • Eyebrows and false lashes were a more natural shape. Although a ‘natural’ look was the style it often took a lot of effort to achieve this!

Although fashions have changed over the decades the variety and quality of make-up has improved immensely. So, try the retro look using today's improved products!
